Overview

The Denman North Package 1 project is situated in the newly developed Molonglo area, consisting of a subdivision development incorporating the construction of three stages of a subdivision of 8 multi-unit
blocks and 77 residential blocks.

The project involved the undertaking of a large earthworks package. The complex earthworks package required extensive planning from the entire project staff. Over 400,000m3 of earthworks cut had to be undertaken across several stages with 150,000 m3 to be placed as fill in future packages to ensure earthworks costs and movements were as efficient as possible. Due to the deep cut requirements (up to 12m deep) and large amounts of hard rock located onsite, Wodens adopted blasting and material processing to ensure the materials could be incorporated into the controlled fill.

To assist the client and meet the demand of residential land sales, the tender and onsite early works were completed in accordance with the early design approval documentation, while the detailed design and approvals were obtained. This created opportunity to make an early start on the detailed and extensive earthworks which were particularly challenging given that the existing site was a pine
tree plantation.

A large quantity of hydraulics works were also undertaken for the project. 4,500m of Stormwater pipes were installed, a large pond was constructed, 3,900m of Sewer Pipes including a 300mm offsite sewer was completed, and extensive watermain and shared trench was undertaken as well. Over 1700m of complex / detailed tiered rock retaining walls were constructed.

The team successfully managed the multifaceted construction program with multiple work fronts running in parallel and were adjusted regularly to mitigate project details from several site conditions, as well as design changes that came about during the works.
At the heart of the project’s success was an exemplary display of project and construction management, marked by meticulous planning, agile management, and adherence to construction excellence and industry best practices. The strategic approach adopted by the consortium of Woden Contractors, Spiire, and CED laid a robust foundation for managing the project’s multifaceted demands, ensuring not only the project’s within-budget completion but also setting a new benchmark in construction project execution.
