Overview

The Denman North Package 2 project is situated in the newly developed Molonglo area, consisting of a subdivision development incorporating the construction of three stages of a subdivision of 9 multi-unit blocks and 89 residential blocks. This subdivision was the 2nd stage of the Denman Prospect North development for the community.

The project involved the undertaking of a large earthworks package. The complex earthworks package required extensive planning from the entire project staff. Over 250,000m3 of earthworks cut had to be undertaken across several stages. Due to the deep cut requirements (up to 7m deep) and large amounts of hard rock located onsite, Wodens adopted blasting and material processing to ensure the materials could be incorporated into the controlled fill.

Extensive drone technology was utilised on this project to undertake quantity verification, track and monitor material movements, aerial photography, and helping create up to date Vehicle Movement plans

To assist the client and meet the demand of residential land sales, the tender and onsite early works were completed in accordance with the early design approval documentation, while the detailed design and approvals were obtained. This created an opportunity to make an early start on the detailed and extensive earthworks which were particularly challenging given that the existing site was a pine tree plantation.

The project involved an extensive landscaping package which was added post tender, which involved pond works, jetty, boardwalks, and extensive planting and grassing areas. Wodens worked closely with our landscaping contractor, creating detailed maintenance schedules and programs, to deliver a high-quality area for the community

Over 1000m of complex / detailed tiered rock retaining walls were constructed. Due to these walls being multi-tiered and close together, each tier had to be constructed and backfilled before the next level could be constructed.  This required careful management and planning which ended in a very high-quality outcome.

A large quantity of hydraulics works was also undertaken for the project. 4,140m of Stormwater pipes were installed, 2,865m of Sewer Pipes, and an extensive watermain and shared trench was undertaken as well.

An innovative solution that was undertaken on the project was using onsite crushed material in footpath and driveway subbase. This required extensive testing and refining to make a suitable material. It was cost effective and saved many truck movements to and from site.

The team successfully managed the multifaceted construction program with multiple work fronts running in parallel and were adjusted regularly to mitigate project details from several site conditions, as well as design changes that came about during the works.

Environmental management presented several challenges which were managed with a strong level of expertise. These included the management of erosion and sediment control across steep grades and a sensitive creek area running along the low side of the project.

At the heart of the project’s success was an exemplary display of project and construction management, marked by meticulous planning, agile management, and adherence to construction excellence and industry best practices. The strategic approach adopted by the consortium of Woden Contractors, Spiire, and CED laid a robust foundation for managing the project’s multifaceted demands, ensuring not only the project’s within-budget completion but also setting a new benchmark in construction project execution.
